Digital technologies (e.g., technologies that enable precision agriculture) have been suggested as a potential solution to reconcile environmental sustainability and yield increases. By embedding digital technologies into holistic farming system visualized through mission statements, this study tests the effect of different intensities of digitization, as well as environmental arguments on the willingness to buy food produced by farms in Germany. We use a 4 x 4 repeated measure experimental design surveying a representative sample of 2,020 German citizens recruited online. Our research framework captures the farming system (comparing low intensity of digitalization for a small or organic farm and low, medium, and high intensity of digitalization for large or conventional farms) and environmental arguments (comparing no arguments, and altruistic, egoistic, and biospheric arguments). The results show a negative effect of digital technologies on willingness to buy. However, this relationship turns positive when introducing environmental arguments. Furthermore, there is a moderation effect for respondents’ attitudes towards technologies that varies depending on whether altruistic, egoistic, or biospheric concerns were stated. The results indicate that digital technologies can increase willingness to buy products from both large and conventional farms, but not to the level of small farms and organic farms.}, keywords = {Ackerbau, Digitalisation, Direct Marketing, Direktvermarktung, Ertragsmodelle, Sustainability}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {article} } @inproceedings{nokey, title = {Coupling of Simulation Tools for Obtaining Local Fatigue in Combination with Experimental Data}, author = {N. Since environmental conditions have a strong impact on the growth and nutrient capture in roots and shoots of individual catch crop species, we anticipated that mixtures will be more durable and efficient in nutrient capture due to compensatory effects among component species. We tested this hypothesis and determined the nitrogen and phosphorus accumulation in the shoots and roots of four catch crop species grown in pure vs. mixed stands at two sites for two or three years. Element concentrations were determined in the root and shoot biomass of each species and used to calculate the nutrient pool fixed in the root or shoot biomass. A qPCR-based technique was applied to quantify the root biomass of individual species based on species-specific DNA sequences. Despite considerable variation across environments, the overall plant biomass of white mustard (Sinapis alba), lacy phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia) and bristle oat (Avena strigosa) was similar and higher than that of Egyptian clover (Trifolium alexandrinum). While pure stands varied 6- to 24-fold in shoot biomass depending on environmental conditions, the variation was only ~3-fold for catch crop mixtures, with less pronounced variation in the root biomass. In general, the root biomass was comparable to the shoot biomass in each species. Roots contributed 26\textendash46% of the nitrogen and 36\textendash48% of the phosphorus to the total accumulation of these nutrients in the catch crop biomass, thus emphasizing the importance of plant roots as belowground nutrient pool for potential carry-over of nutrients to the subsequent crop. Although the mixture was mostly dominated by two of the four species, namely mustard and phacelia, it captured similar or even larger amounts of nutrients than the best-performing pure stand under any growth condition. This was the case for shoot- and for root-bound nutrients. Our results indicate that catch crop mixtures have higher durability than pure cultures to environmental variations. The amount of nitrogen captured by the mixture meets the average postharvest nitrogen that is left over by a wide range of cash crops, thus emphasizing that catch crop mixtures represent an efficient nutrient management tool in crop rotations.}, keywords = {Ackerbau, Biomasse, Catch crops, D\"{u}ngung, Nachwachsende Rohstoffe}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {article} } @media{nokey, title = {Ukraine-Krieg: Fallen jetzt die GPS-Lenksysteme an Traktoren aus?}, author = {L. Further, uncertainty in precipitation makes crop water management relevant in regions where it has not been necessary thus far. Here, we focus on the potential of winter-killed catch crops (CCs) to reduce N leaching losses from N mineralization over the winter and from soil water management. We compared four single CCs (white mustard, phacelia, Egyptian clover and bristle oat) and two CC mixtures with 4 and 12 plant species (Mix4 and Mix12) with a fallow treatment. High-resolution soil mineral N (Nmin) monitoring in combination with the modelling of spatiotemporal dynamics served to assess N cycling under winter-killed CCs, while soil water was continuously monitored in the rooting zone. Catch crops depleted the residual Nmin pools by between 40 % and 72 % compared to the fallow. The amount of residual N uptake was lowest for clover and not significantly different among the other CCs. Catch crops that produce high N litter materials, such as clover and mustard leaves, showed an early N mineralization flush immediately after their termination and the highest leaching losses from litter mineralization over the winter. Except for clover, all CCs showed Nmin values between 18 % and 92 % higher on the sowing date of the following maize crop. However, only Mix12 was statistically significant. Catch crops depleted the soil water storage in the rooting zone during their growth in autumn and early winter, but preserved water later on when their residues covered the ground. The shallow incorporation of CC residues increased water storage capacity during the cropping season of the main crop even under reduced soil water availability. Hence, catch cropping is not just a simple plant cover for the winter but improves the growth conditions for the following crop with decreased N losses. Mixtures have been shown to compensate for the weaknesses of individual CC species in terms of nutrient capture, mineralization and transfer to the following main crop as well as for soil water management. The model comprises one husk as the smallest unit of the insulating panel. In order to solve the model analytically, the following relevant parameters have been determined: − husk geometry − density of the pure husk material − thermal conductivity of the pure husk material − emission coefficient of the husk's surface − convection coefficient inside the husks − density of the binder − thickness of the binder − thermal conductivity of the binder The solved model is validated with produced insulating panels out of grain husks. The optimization of the effective thermal conductivity λeff is done regarding the following parameters: − the filling gas − the edge length of the husks According to the results of the simulation, by using Xenon as filling gas instead of air, the effective thermal conductivity λeff can be reduced by 21.6 %. The optimal value of the husk’s edge length a depends on the filling gas und therefore varies between 4 and 6 mm. The optimization of the edge length leads to a reduction of the effective thermal conductivity λeff of 7.5 %, according to the model. When implementing individual calculated optimizations in real insulation boards, the thermal conductivity could be improved by up to 32 %. The aim of this study was to examine standardized milk yield, metabolism and fertility parameters in organic dairy farming for correlations to different husbandry systems. For this purpose, data related to milk yielding provided eleven times a year by the “Landeskuratorium der Erzeugerringe f\"{u}r tierische Veredelung in Bayern e. V. (LKV)” for the period 2015\textendash2017 were available. Fifty-six organic dairy farms of the Naturland association in the Bavarian Alpine foothills [31 Tie-stall farms with grazing (AH+W), 18 free stall housing systems with grazing (LS+W), 7 free stall housing systems with free-range area (LS+A)] were analysed. Herd size, milk yield and milk constituents, non-return rate at 90 days, calving to first-service interval and calving interval, as well as the proportion of cows at risk of ketosis were compared. Focus of the study was the year 2017, as data of the staple feed was available for this year. The calculated energy density of the staple feed in summer was similar between the housing systems, but in winter it was lower for AH+W farms than for LS+W and LS+A. LS+A farms showed significantly higher milk yield (p \< 0.001) and a lower proportion of cows at risk of ketosis in 2017. Compared to AH+W farms, cows in LS+W and LS+A farms had a shorter calving interval. It can be deduced that free stall housing systems without grazing are more intensive and thus achieve better performance than farms whose cows consume a major part of the ration grazing in summer. The species’ north-eastern distribution range includes Luxembourg and the southern part of Belgium. The species has shown a dramatic decline in the past decade in both countries and in neighbouring Germany. The aim of the present study was to investigate the characteristics of A. rendlei populations in Luxembourg and its bordering regions in Belgium, Germany, and France and to determine whether regions and populations differ in plant morphology and site ecology. At each survey site plant material from A. rendlei was collected and the species’ population density was calculated. Furthermore, soil samples were taken, and the floristic composition of the sites overall was analysed. Within the study area, mean density of A. rendlei plants per population showed extensive variation. The presence of the species could only be confirmed in half of the known sites, out of which more than 50% were meadows. In reference to plant morphology, Luxemburgish populations were similar to the Belgian ones, except for one population in the south of Luxembourg that displayed many similarities to French populations. In the German population the internodia were shorter than in the other studied populations. Plant size as well as leaf length and the leaf length-width ratio increased from Belgium to Luxembourg and France. The conclusions include management and further research proposals. Health promoting, disease preventing and other favourable effects make these plants and their extracts valuable as dietary and feed additives. This review covers some current aspects of conventional breeding, particularly of German chamomile, of phytochemical analytics and of use of medicinal plants in feed supplementation. We addressed the hypothesis of whether the supply of different nitrogen forms can be employed to manipulate the tiller number in cereal crops. Relative to urea or ammonium, exclusive supply of nitrate increased tiller number in hydroponically-grown barley plants. Thereby, tiller number correlated positively with the root-to-shoot translocation rate of endogenous cytokinins. External supply of a synthetic cytokinin analog further stimulated tillering in nitrate-containing but not in urea-containing nutrient solution. When the cytokinin analog 6-benzylaminopurine riboside was externally supplied to roots, its translocation to shoots was 2.5 times higher in presence of nitrate than in presence of urea or ammonium, suggesting that cytokinin loading into the xylem is affected by different nitrogen forms. We then translated this finding to field scale, cultivated winter wheat in four environments, and confirmed that nitrate fertilization significantly increased tiller number in a dose-dependent manner. As assessed in 22 winter wheat cultivars, nitrogen form-dependent tiller formation was subject to substantial genotypic variation. We conclude that cytokinin-mediated signaling effects of fertilizer nitrogen forms can be employed as a management tool to regulate the tiller number in cereal crops.}, keywords = {Ackerbau, Bodenbearbeitung, D\"{u}ngung}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {article} } @inproceedings{nokey, title = {SmartBioGrid: Optionen zum Einsatz von fester Biomasse in dekarbonisierten W\"{a}rmenetzen}, author = {H. Therefore the need for usage of regenerative energies is obvious. Biogas plants are advantageous because they can be used with-out spatial limitation and their substrate is abundant ubiquitously as it covers the whole range of produced organic matter from photosynthesis, municipal, industri-al and animal waste. Although the need for optimization strategies is given, the fermentation process in biogas plants is complex and therefore traditional optimization approaches are cumbersome and carry the risk of com-plete plant failure. In this paper the optimization poten-tial of the ADM1, which represents a detailed description of the anaerobic digestion process is analysed and com-pared to the standard ADM1 setup. Technical parame-ters like substrate composition and dilution rate are optimized to yield a high methane gas flow. It is shown that the optimization of substrate composition has a direct impact on the maximum applicable dilution rate. It is also shown that the feeding rate can be increased to yield higher productivities with optimized substrate compositions.}, keywords = {Biogas plants, Biogasanlagen, model based optimization, Nachwachsende Rohstoffe}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {article} } @article{nokey, title = {Die Position jedes Grenzpunkts z\"{a}hlt}, author = {R. Here, we investigate the impacts of increasing plant diversity in catch crop rotations on rhizosphere C input and microbial utilization. Mustard (Sinapis alba L.) planted as a single cultivar was compared to diversified catch crop mixtures of four (Mix4) or 12 species (Mix12). We traced the C transfer from shoots to roots towards the soil microbial community and the soil respiration in a 13C pulse labelling field experiment. Net CO2-C uptake from the atmosphere increased by two times in mix 4 and more than three times in mix 12. Higher net ecosystem C production was linked to increasing catch crop diversity and increased belowground transfer rates of recently fixed photoassimilates. The higher rhizosphere C input stimulated the growth and activity of the soil microbiome, which was investigated by phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analyses. Total microbial biomass increased from 14 to 22 g m−2 as compared to the fallow and was 18 and 8% higher for mix 12 and mix 4 as compared to mustard. In particular, the fungal and actinobacterial communities profited the most from the higher belowground C input and their biomass increased by 3.4 and 1.3 times as compared to the fallow. The residence time of the 13C pulse, traced in the CO2 flux from the soil environment, increased with plant diversity by up to 1.8 times. The results of this study suggest positive impacts of plant diversity on C cycling by higher atmospheric C uptake, higher transport rates towards the rhizosphere, higher microbial incorporation and prolonged residence time in the soil environment. It is a promising source for polyphenolic compounds and fibers which could be used in food industry. In this work proximate chemical analysis of olive pomace (two-phase olive oil extraction) was studied. Also, seven extracting solvents were tested in extracting the phenolic compounds from the olive pomace (OP). Total phenolic, flavonoids, and flavonols contents of the different extracts were determined. In addition to, the antioxidant activity of the phenolic extracts was investigated using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrihydrazyl (DPPH) to assess the efficiency of the extracting solvents. The obtained data rivaled that protein, fat, ash and fiber contents of OP were 2.48, 2.33, 1.33 and 20.37% (FW), respectively. It is clear that the OP contains a large quantity of fibers and it had cellulose content about 40.7% of the fiber content. Furthermore, the total phenolic content was varied in the different extracts and ranged from 8.29 to 36.24 mg GAE g -1. While, the total flavonoids were ranged from 2.23 to 12.52 mg QE g-1. Methanol and water (80:20) recorded the highest antioxidant activity with EC50 of 1.373g/g DPPH while, the acetone extract recorded the lowest antioxidant activity with EC50 of 8.052g /g DPPH. Toast bread was fortified with the cellulose isolated from OP at three replacement levels of 2, 4, and 6% and the results showed that there were no significant differences between control sample and the sample fortified with 2% cellulose in most of sensory characteristics tested. Addition of pomace cellulose at replacement level of 2% enhanced the texture of the bead and was more acceptable than the control. This research included three trials to determine ploidy purity and genomic stability of diploid, triploid and auto-tetraploid varieties of German chamomile during life-time and across generations after interploid crosses. Impacts of auxin application were evaluated for seed set, germination rate and progeny ploidy. Ploidy was assessed by flow cytometry and chromosome counting. Ploidy purity in cultivars ranged from 64% (‘Lutea’, 4x) to 100% (‘Bona’, 2x), the share of ploidy-deviants was in 4x-cultivars higher (8%) than in 2x (1%). Auxin application resulted in higher seed set in tetraploids only, while the number of progeny did neither depend on cross direction nor on auxin application. Life time genome stability applied for all ploidy levels. Ploidy level of progeny from 2x × 4x crosses was mostly linked to the maternal level. 3x plants bore progeny with diverse ploidy forms, but not with triploidy. However, cultivars should regularly be monitored for conformance to declared ploidy also in awareness of possible unintended contamination.}, keywords = {Auxin, Interploidy, Matricaria chamomilla, Ploidy, Triploid}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {article} } @article{Heuermann.2019, title = {Interspecific competition among catch crops modifies vertical root biomass distribution and nitrate scavenging in soils}, author = {D. Co-cultivation of different species is anticipated to lead to vertical root niche differentiation and thus to higher soil nutrient depletion. Using a qPCR-based method we quantified root biomass distribution of four catch crop species in vertical soil profiles in pure vs. mixed stands. Pure stands of mustard and phacelia robustly reached 70 cm soil depth, while oat preferably colonized upper soil layers, and clover developed the shallowest and smallest root system. Analysis of residual nitrate pools in different soil depths and correlation with root biomass showed that, besides rooting depth also root biomass determines soil nitrogen depletion. While occupying the same vertical niches as in pure stands, mustard and phacelia dominated total root biomass of the mix. In contrast, root biomass of clover and oat was severely suppressed in presence of the other species. Below-ground biomass profiling indicated low niche complementarity among the root systems of the examined species. Nonetheless, the mixture mostly overyielded root biomass of the pure stands and thus shows higher potential for efficient soil exploration by roots.}, keywords = {Agroecology, Plant Ecology}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {article} } @book{MohrleI.., title = {BfN- Treffpunkt Biologische Vielfalt XVII, Interdisziplin\"{a}rer Forschungsaustausche im Rahmen des \"{U}bereinkommens \"{u}ber die biologische Vielfalt: Raum f\"{u}r Vielfalt- Online Weiterbildungsangebot f\"{u}r mehr Biodiversit\"{a}t in der Agrarlandschaft}, author = {M. Two balanced groups of cows (n = 16) were used. The EO group received a total mixed ration (TMR) and a concentrate plus 0.56 g EO blend per kg of dry matter (DM), the control group (CON) was fed the same feed without EO dietary supplementation. Results showed higher DM intake (DMI) of TMR and daily milk yield for CON (22.48 and 39.17 kg) than for EO cows (21.03 and 37.10 kg, P \< 0.001), while intake of the concentrate and FE (milk yield/DMI) did not differ. FE was increased as an effect of EO supplementation (1.84 vs 1.80, P = 0.001), if body weight and pre-experimental FE were respected as co-variates. The FE progress during the 4-week test period displayed a strong negative correlation of trend line slopes and intercepts (r = −0.887, EO group). An inherent FE of 1.69 separated the predicted FE progress by treatment. EO cows with a higher inherent FE proceeded in steeper FE slopes than CON. No evidence of a general increase of FE after EO intake in dairy cows could be determined, unless additional individual parameters are considered.}, keywords = {essential oils, feed additives, milk yield, phytogenic compounds, thymol}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {article} } @proceedings{GroperM.Wagner.2019, title = {13. In order to achieve this target renewable energy resources (like agricultural waste) in biogas plants can be used. An anaerobic bacterial fermentation process digests the substrates into methane and carbon dioxide. The process itself has strong fluctuations in terms of net methane yield due to different amounts and composition of agricultural influents. For increasing the space time yield two main difficulties are encountered. The first one is system-specific and includes stirrer design and reactor geometry. The second affects the biotechnological fermentation process. The following work is focusing on the fermentation process. The determination of critical parameters for the optimization of the anaerobic microbial digestion is investigated. An economic approach for solving these problems is only feasible by using mathematical models and simulation. Consequently two fermentation models are compared by regarding parameter sensitivity and critical operational points. The first one is based on simple Monod-kinetics while the second one is extended with two steps of fermentation and therefore two different microbial consortia and additive inhibition effects. The complex model is able to describe different phenomena in more detail. But its estimability and therefore its validation is difficult without further investigation of the model structure and the reduction of the model complexity. One important result of the investigation is that stable process conditions with simultaneous high yields are depending on a careful adjustment of the loading rate and therefore requiring precise model parameters.}, keywords = {Biogas plants, Biogasanlagen, Simulation}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {proceedings} } @book{Korn.2018, title = {Treffpunkt Biologische Vielfalt XVI: Interdisziplin\"{a}rer Forschungsaustausch im Rahmen des \"{U}bereinkommens \"{u}ber die biologische Vielfalt}, author = {M. One important result of the investigation is that stable process conditions with simultaneous high yields are depending on a careful adjustment of the loading rate and therefore requiring precise model parameters.}, keywords = {Biogas plants, Biogasanlagen, Simulation}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {proceedings} } @proceedings{RiessC.GroperM.WalterM.S.J.WeihererS..2018, title = {EPE 2018 - 10th International Conference on Electrical and Power Engineering: Evaluation and quantification of the range extension of battery powered electric vehicles in winter through the use of a separate powered heating unit}, author = {M. However, it is foreseeable that without this subvention biogas plants cannot compete with other regenerative plants such as photovoltaic and wind power plants on the open electricity market. Accordingly, it is of great importance for biogas plant operators to identify and occupy suitable niches to make full use of the unique features of their plants. Because of their predictable availability, those plants can particularly benefit of earning opportunities in times of high demand and contribute to grid stabilization. In order to keep the effort for plant operators as low as possible the automation of existing biogas plants can be extended and enabled to communicate with market platforms or control centers of the distribution system operator. Thus biogas plants can contribute to balancing group compensation not only for accounting purposes but factual by appropriate feed-in into the electrical network in consideration of actual demand.}, keywords = {Biogas plants, Digitalisation, Direct Marketing, Energy Flexibility, Feed-In Tariffs}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {article} } @article{nokey, title = {Numerische Simulation einer asymmetrischen Drallstr\"{o}mung - Vergleich der numerischen Turbulenzmodellierung mit experimentellen Messungen}, author = {K.
